Bonjour!

My name is Makky from Japan.
I'm sorry but I can not use French correctly, so I wrote here in English.

I found GGCC through Youtube videos and really excited for many beautiful GTI.
It's really happy if I can share informations and stories with GREAT GGCC! :D

I have 1978 GTI.
I know few other GTI are running in Japan, but it is pretty rare compare with France.
My father bought this car in 1996 and he started the restoration.
But he couldn't complete the restoration due to the lack of time and money, and the car had been stored in the garage for more than 10 years  .
Then I took over from him and completed it.

Welcome !
Your GTI is really nice. I didn't know that there were golf GTI fans in Japan.
Are there any GTI club ? Do you know how many fans there are ?

Bienvenue parmi nous !
These earlier models are the better and quite rare, especially in Japan :D but I didn't know that seats' color, where does it come from ? Je pose également la question à ceux qui savent.

Hello!
It's really great that you found this site so far away from central Europe!!
Your 78 seems really solid and free from rust damages. Such clean models are not common here too!
Are your front seats some Time matching recaro's(under the cover protection I mean)?

Do you know the story of this car? Did vw export some Gtis to Japan already in78?? Or was this one from Italy ?

Hello, and welcome! Nice to see that GTIs have some maniacs in Japan too!
Very nice Gti. As told Bils, it would be great to have some details about this car's story.

As you posted it in 2011, I found some additional information about you car story, restoration and its specific equipement"Japan streets regulation" (100kmh speedometer limits with buzzer, front turns signs as Italy had an so on).
http://vwgolfmk1.org.uk/forum/index.php ... from-japan
I also noted that your car has the first models of side mirrors with inside adjustment. This model has been only produced in 78 and in Europe was available in option only on the GLS verions (Luxous). I may admit that the cardboard that you took out (also from GLS version in Europe) were the right ones for these side mirros instead of the "standard european versions gti cardboards.

Thank you every one, Merci! :D

I'm not sure the history of my car before my father bought but MK1 GTI was not officially imported into Japan by VWJAPAN when they are on sale.
So all GTI in Japan should be imported through import car dealer for the person who needed it.
Do you know how to check the history of the car?
In Japan, we can't find any of these kind of services.

I know 10 GTI and 1 Oettinger 16S are still running in Japan at least, but there're no Clubs like GGCC at present.

I'm using with seat covers currently and base color of the seat is silver stripes.
The original seat fabric was red plaid design.

The door mirror is not original but made by Vitaloni, and can not be adjusted from inside of the car.
As Bils said before, the door card was replaced to the original GTI version which doesn't have the hole for mirror knobs currently  .

We can find the indicator on the front fender all of Golf1 in Japan.
This indicator lens was originally used for Porsche?(I heard it before ...).
Japanese road regulation said that the car must have the indicator on the side of the car, so VW attached it onto export model for Japan.

The open vent window was already fitted when he came our home.
Tow hook on the front lower panel was added in the process of restoration.
Fuel distributor and air flow meter is using DX version, and the throttle is big throttle got from Audi 100.

If you have any questions feel free to ask me :D

Merci :D
Makky.

Hello Makky, great to read again some news from Japan!
I don't know if it's right or wrong but I remember some pictures of a white original Golf mk1 GTI with small taillight (79-80 specification) surrounded by S2000 and other "japanese delights".
I always though that it was from Mugen... but it's seems it's spoon!

These pictures are famous in the VW as it show the mk1 as a benchmark for "light is right"!

About the history of your car, you can order a birthcertificate for around 50Euros to VW Museum in Germany (Wolfsburg).
http://automuseum.volkswagen.de/en/cert ... heets.html
This way will be able to know where it came from exactly, the equipment and so on..

About the front indicator lights that are fit on your car as other in Japan, the same were also used for the same reasons (traffic road regulations) on VW GOLF mk1 exported from Germany to ITALY.

Here is the very special one of two produceed by VW Mk1 1977 Gti 5 doors gave to Giurgiaro in 77. See the semaphores type.

It's a shame that the old sepcific front frame has been exchanged for a earlier type with the hook hinge but such part details are for sure very hard to be sourced in Japan!

I know that the aircooled industry is very famous in Japan as Flat4 and mooneyes companies are well known worldwide, maybe the watercooled section will be more present in future who knows.. anyway, we'll be glad to support you!
