some of the oldest known MK2 GTI
some of the oldest known MK2 GTI
Hi Friends, Bonjour à tous et toutes, und ein herzliches Salue aus dem Saarland!
My name is Karsten, I am a child of the eighties/ninties and last year I realised my dream of an oldshool MK 2 GTI.
My first cars when I was 18-20 y.o. was '77 GTI, '83 Pirelli-GTI and the third car was a '88 Jetta II GT 16V "Style" - later in my live I only bought Wolfsburg and Ingolstadt-Products until today.
So, some people would say I got a terrible VW/Audi-virus
With a big great pleasure I read the "restaurations" thread of member classic driver, because as most of us know the '84 (in Germany we say: "zweier-ur-GTI") is a rare modell, which was only 360 days produced . We believe that only less than 300 cars of the real 84 GTI are surviving in Europe. In Germany we know only about twenty early (in 84 built) GTI's, thats all that is known and available.
My GTI was complete naked I restored every single screw, even the engine was rebuild and got its renewal in every corner.
I bought the GTI in Oktober 2010 and I am an "Einzelkämpfer-Schrauber" that means one-man-show -screwer (without car-mechanics-friends or family).
In Germany a 30 y.o. car is an Oldtimer, with a historic Number-Plate a Classic-car-certification (Oldtimergutachten), for me it's important to see me car in Sommer 2013 running, but without some help that surely stays only a dream. will see.
Are you interested in some pictures, of what I've done the last 2 years...? watch the attachments (edit: there are a lot of restrictions about size and pixelpoints about the pictures so I cant attach restauration pictures - please use this link below) -> http://sdrv.ms/TXH1WY (only a few weeks visible)
friendly regards from the south west of Germany, Karsten

Hi and welcome here Karsten.
We hope your Golf will get back to its original state, because as you said, there were a couple of styling fails when you bought it.
Don't hesitate to open a topic in the "Restaurations" forum and give some details on your work.
See you.

Re: some of the oldest known MK2 GTI
Hi Friends, today I read your answers - with a great pleasure. I never thought, that I can get such a positve response here.
Of course, @Classic Driver as you can see, one of the pictures at my link is your car. I was that in love with your GTI, that I included one of your pictures into my skydrive pictureshow. Your beautiful black 84GTI is 99 percent like mine! I bought my GTI in october 2010 near Poland (Frankfurt/Oder). I drove back to the Saarland on int's own wheels, and the car was with this "tuning-sins" you can see at the first picture below. (wrong wheels, no stripes, Frontwindscreenwindow with green sun-guard, wrong front grille, black side markers instead of small GTI-signs, ... and so on)
For those who believe that I am a fake, you are invited to visit me, and help me putting the engine back into the GTI. I am a one-man-show-screwer, without any knowledge in car-mechanical-techincs. I am only an insurance administrator. Here at the Saarland is no GTI-Schrauber Scene, I mean no guys who are experts in old Golf GTI workings. so that is the reason, that I work for more than two years at this car and the point that I am afraid of puttin' the enginge (alone) back into the car,

I try to write from time to time, and maybe we can have a classic-Mk2-GTI meeting anytime. best regards from the Saare, Magixx

Don't be afraid, it looks like you're doing a great job as far as I can see, and putting back the engine is not a big deal.

Re: some of the oldest known MK2 GTI
Hi Friends, by the way I've got a little wordpress-page about my working the last to years.
(I try to do it in a chronologik order)
http://golf19e.wordpress.com/
and some other pictures at my skydrive
https://skydrive.live.com/#cid=E20E0297 ... A48E%21105
since last weekend the engine is back in the GTI, and yesterday we've installed the front window shield (without green-sunsstripe on top, like the car was in 2010 when I bought it)
friendly regards from the Saarland! Karsten

Re: some of the oldest known MK2 GTI
Hello Karsten,
I really hope that you will find here some good information about the early "E" zweier Ur Gti!
This model year is so different to older "F" one and overall the early one have different part construction as the back sticker in three piece instead of one on the "younger", the roofliner structure, the rear door cleaner tank etc.
One characteristic that I've seen failling on your restauration is the Grill.
The first 84' gti Grill had a crimped separate plastic part allowing a curved freeshape for the screw driver to adjust the front lights. This is also very "first 84" specific!

Re: some of the oldest known MK2 GTI
Hi guys,
On my side, my GTI is a "F" and not an "E", because it was built in august 1984.
However, it has all the little specificities listed by Bils, and a couple of others :
- specific rear panel for single exhaust (on later "basis" models, we can guess the space allowed in the panel for twin exhaust on "GTI")
- specifics front wings badges "GTI" (smaller)
- rear window sticker in three parts instead of one (I've learned this point today
)
- specific sun visor with a little magnetic shutter on the mirror
- maybe the "shark skin" texture of the roofliner ?
- specific pushers on dashboard (foglights,...) with little round light instead of oval ones.
- and a lot of more evident points !

Re: some of the oldest known MK2 GTI

Re: some of the oldest known MK2 GTI
Hi Friends, yesterday I read these postings and the very nice pictures of Classic Drivers black '84 "F".
Of course I am still working on rebuilding my GTI. Enging is back in the car and these days we are strong working on detecting the electric cables. I think in about 14 days I will post some update pictures.
One thing I dont understand: "There

The first 84' gti Grill had a crimped separate plastic part allowing a curved freeshape for the screw driver to adjust the front lights. This is also very "first 84" specific!"
Where can I find this?
Here in Germany are less than fourty '84 "EV" Mk2 GTI surviving. The German Zuassungsstatistik says only 521 "EV"GTI (all over) from 1984-1987 "online" -> Date February 2013. That's the point, I am saying maximum perhaps 30-40 "1984GTI here in Deutschland"
And Bils, you're right, the 84 zweier-UR-GTI has a lot of different things apart from the 85-or younger GTI - I guess, better: I hope I know most of them.
Would be a nice meeting, every colour of 84 GTI together in a meet and greet next year. A white 84, these here known black ones, a Marsred, a Lhasa green and a grey 84 GTI, the nice silver.... we should think about it (just an idea @ all 84 GTI owner)
